Positioning Fundamentals

The AWP is the highest-impact weapon in CS2 at $4750, but poor positioning turns it into an expensive liability. Your job is to hold angles where you get the first shot and can fall back safely if you miss.

Off-Angle Philosophy

Never hold the obvious angle. If every player in your rank expects an AWP at a given spot, hold two meters to the left or right. Off-angles force enemies to clear extra space, giving you 200-300ms of free reaction time. On Dust2 Long A, instead of holding from the corner of Long Doors, hold from the pit or from the car — positions that require separate crosshair placement to check.

  • Always have a fallback position planned before you scope in
  • Never re-peek the same angle twice in a round — reposition after every shot
  • Use elevation changes (boxes, ledges, boost spots) to create unexpected angles
  • On CT side, play further back to maximize your angle advantage
  • On T side, use aggressive peeks early then fall back to passive holds

Peek Types & When to Use Them

The Three AWP Peeks

  1. 1.Holding Peek — Pre-aimed at a corner, waiting for enemies to walk into your crosshair. Best on CT side when you know the enemy execute timing. Keep crosshair at head level exactly where they will appear.
  2. 2.Jiggle Peek — Quick A-D strafe to bait a shot or gather info. Use this to check if an angle is being held before committing. Never scope during a jiggle peek — use it for information only.
  3. 3.Aggressive Peek — Wide swing with pre-aim, committing to the fight. Only do this when you have info (teammate spotted them, utility cleared the angle, or you heard footsteps). Scope before you peek and counter-strafe to shoot.

In the current CS2 meta, the aggressive peek is riskier than in CS:GO because sub-tick movement makes counter-strafing less forgiving. Prioritize holding peeks and only swing aggressively when you have a numbers or information advantage.

AWP Economy Management

The AWP costs $4750 — nearly a third of a full buy. Mismanaging your AWP economy can single-handedly lose your team multiple rounds. Understanding when to buy, save, and drop is critical.

Buy/Save Decision Tree

  • $4750+ and team is full buying: Buy the AWP. This is your default case.
  • $4750+ but team is on eco: DO NOT buy the AWP alone. A solo AWP with four pistol teammates is a losing gambit in 90% of rounds.
  • You died with AWP last round and have $2000-3000: Force buy a rifle (Galil/FAMAS) or SMG. Do not save for AWP while your team full buys without you.
  • You survived with the AWP: Protect it. Play more passively, let teammates take risks. A saved AWP is worth $4750 to your team economy.
  • Score is 12-13 or match point: Buy the AWP regardless of money. There is no next round to save for.

The $1000 Kill Reward Problem

The AWP gives only $100 per kill (vs $300 for rifles, $600 for SMGs). This means a 3-kill AWP round earns you $300, while a 3-kill rifle round earns $900. On T-side, if you are struggling economically, consider playing rifles for a few rounds to rebuild your bank before switching back to the AWP.

Utility Synergy & Team Play

A naked AWP is dangerous; an AWP with utility support is devastating. In the current CS2 pro meta, teams use 3-4 smokes per execute minimum, and AWPers benefit enormously from coordinated utility.

  • Ask teammates to smoke off the counter-angle before you peek — if you are peeking Mid on Mirage, get Window smoked so you only fight one angle
  • Use your own flash to peek aggressively — pop flash over a wall, peek as it detonates
  • Molotovs force enemies out of cover and into your crosshair — have teammates molly common hiding spots
  • After getting a pick, immediately call for a trade — your teammates should be ready to refrag if you die on the second duel
  • In default setups, the AWPer holds the most important angle while riflers play around you as trade partners

Communication is everything. Call your position, call when you are scoped (so teammates know you cannot rotate quickly), and call when you need to reposition. A silent AWPer is a liability to the team.
